Fredericktown Public Library
The Fredericktown Community Library is an excellent example of the people of the community contributing their resources for the good of the area residents.
By January of 1993, the existing library collection had grown to over 25,000 volumes. It became obvious that for the second time, the library had outgrown it’s facilities.
Once again, the community came forward, formed a feasibility committee that met for the first time on February 1, 1993 and began to raise funds to build a new building on a 22 acre site donated by Mr. & Mrs. L. Bruce Levering.
Overall, more than 300 volunteers worked on the construction of the building, 180 persons provided food for the workers and a father and son team moved 48 pickup truck loads of books from the old library to the new facility. A total of over 800 area residents contributed money, labor and food to complete this testimonial to community spirit and pride.
Opening day for the new Fredericktown Community Library was February 1, 1995 exactly two years after the first meeting of the building committee!
On Saturday July 16, 1994 a spectacular library raising day was held. Nearly 200 volunteer workers including two local Amish crews, labored from 6:00am to 10:00pm, framing and erecting the shell of the new library.
This community achievement is another example of our motto:
“It can be done in a small town”
